What we do

KIWAMWAKU FOUNDATION set this 5 years plan to achieve a number of its objectives which ought to shape and guide the organization. Its purpose is to help the organization do a better job and keep focused towards those goals. To come up with this ideal, the organization involved stakeholders meetings, technocrats, the board and social development workers which finally gave birth to the following objective and their strategies.

Gender gap does not only exist worldwide but vividly seen in Tanzania. In bringing about gender equality and fulfilling the sustainable development goal number 05, the government of Tanzania placed gender at the center in her National Development Vision 2025 “Tanzania shall ensure attainment of gender equality, empowerment of women in all socio-economic & political relations and culture by the year 2025”. Subsequent plans have been prepared to realize the vision 2025 goals, which include among others, the Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) which identifies gender as crosscutting issue in all sectors. The Government reviewed the Women in Development Policy of 1992, with a view to bringing about gender equality. This resulted in the formulation of the Women and Gender Development Policy which was then adopted in 2000. The Policy put emphasis on integration of gender equality in policies, plans, development strategies and actions in all sectors and at all levels in the development process. The policy also enhances promotion of for women’s empowerment opportunities in all spheres including politics, leadership positions, management and economic development. In assisting the government to reach the goal, KIWAMWAKU FOUNDATION in collaboration with stakeholders took gender as priority area for community development strategically as follows;-

  • To construction of gender hub; from which women and gender mainstream will be access gender education on different gender issues. The center will assist psychotherapy for victims, safe home, and help to operate workshop, training materials and research for best and customized gender support models. The center will provide digital applications to support peer education, gender related films, local music, plays, books, games and cartoons for children and community radio.
  • To support income generating activities for women and girls through groups. Women and girls will establish collective investments such as smart agriculture investments like farms venturing in horticulture, poultry and livestock keeping these groups can then be linked with financial institutions where they can get loans for their collective investments.
  • Organizing gender awareness creation campaigns through seminars, community meetings, digital platforms, games, cartoons and brochures. This will include training of TOT’s who will be agents in disseminating information. This will not only ensure spread of knowledge to community but also sustainability of the activity.
  • Provision of leadership skills training to women and young girls especially before election  and after elections. We believe an approach to reduce the gender gap in decision making positions is through capacity building and leadership training. With women in political/decision making positions they will play a vital role in supporting gender, support their families and contribute the growth of the county. Most of families/communities are still led with patriarchal system which hinders gender equality and bar women to top decision making positions. KIWAMWAKU FOUNDATION intends to bring change by preparing women and young girls to raise their voices and take responsible actions in political arena.

Agriculture is the mainstay of the Tanzanian economy contributing to about 24.1 percent of GDP, 30 per cent of export earnings and employs about 75 percent of the total labor force. The rate of growth in agriculture is higher than the average annual population growth rate of 2.6 percent implying growth in incomes. However, the average agricultural growth rate of 4.4 percent is insufficient to lead to significant wealth creation and alleviation of poverty, given the low level of agricultural development. Attaining poverty alleviation requires annual agricultural growth rate of from 6 to 8 percent. To develop an efficient, competitive and profitable agricultural industry that contributes to the improvement of the livelihoods of Tanzanians and attainment of broad based economic growth and poverty alleviation.

The national agriculture policy of 2013 and the sustainable development goal number 01, aims at addressing challenges that continue to hinder the development of the agricultural sector and poverty as a whole. Tanzanian agriculture is affected by low productivity, over dependence on rain-fed agriculture, inadequate agriculture support services, poor infrastructure, weak agro-industries, low quality of agricultural produce, and inadequate participation of the country’s private sector in agriculture, post- harvest loss, environmental degradation and crop pests and diseases. Moreover agriculture requires effective participation for sexes, fair policy environment, equality in resources in order to tap existing capabilities and potentialities so as to for the sector development. There shall, therefore, be a policy shift towards increased investment in agriculture and greater involvement of the private sector, equality in the sector throughout the value chain. In collaboration with stakeholders, KIWAMWAKU FOUNDATION has set the following strategies to reach the objective number two;

  • Promotion of horticulture as a smart agricultural source of income. Horticulture is growing at rate of 11% per annum compared to a 4% growth in the overall agriculture sector. Because of the availability of both tropical and temperature climates along with different attitudes and temperatures, Tanzania’s horticulture sector suffers from many challenges such as low and unequal capacities in quality management and production techniques. With stakeholders KIWAMWAKU FOUNDATION plans to promote production techniques to enhance more income to women, youth and PLHIV in the country.
  • Enhance bee keeping, mushroom, poultry, and ginger and fishing activities; KIWAMWAKU FOUNDATION in collaboration with other stakeholders intends to provide education, support materials, gears and markets to women and youth who are already organized in KIWAMWAKU FOUNDATION branches in collective investment or individually aiming at promoting them to venture in this environmentally friendly business. The knowledge will also be provided to youth (both boys and girls) to create economic independence among them and play a vital role in building the country.
  • To promote Processing of agricultural products so as to increase value of chain. With support from stakeholders KIWAMWAKU FOUNDATION intends enhance awareness of of processing agricultural products, packaging and exports of agric-products. Processing helps increase shelf-life, preservation and  earning, the NGO shall select crops available, support processing machines and  preservation technologies
  • Production of natural seed to contribute to the community seed banks. Tanzania plans to establish community seed banks so as to enhance seed diversity and ensure sustainable food production in Tanzania. Community seed banks can help farmers to access seeds to grow crops during the next planting season and they can be used as an emergency seed supply when their crops are damaged or destroyed by pests, flooding and drought.
  • Support  agriculture education biased on Climate Change, conservation agriculture and agro forest especially in the  highlands, drought and semi-drought areas such as Dodoma, Singida and Kilimanjaro

Activities to achieve objective 2:

  1. To conduct workshops, seminars and exhibitions for KIWAMWAKU FOUNDATION women groups on processing agricultural products.
  2. To provide marketing support for bees, poultry, fishing, ginger, mushroom and fishing products, packaging and export.
  3. To conduct training on effective use of proper organic agricultural practice, conservation agriculture to youth and women by 2027.
  4. Establishment climate change, conservation agriculture, agro-forest and organic demo farms in Handeni village in Mwanga District by 2027.

Tanzania is highly endowed with various natural recourses ranging from wildlife, water, land and forestry however its management is really tense. Therefore effective environmental conservation and management of Tanzania’s natural resources is crucial for sustainable development and livelihoods. In this regard, supported by the 2012 national environmental policy and sustainable development goal number 13, it is important that all stakeholders’ accord appropriate attention to the environment because environmental is really hitting and affecting the socio-economic well-being of many Tanzanians. The country is experiencing severe impacts of climate change with drought and imminent threat of famine in many areas, unprecedented long dry spells that resulted into the drying up of often-reliable water flows both for hydroelectric power generation and other livelihood activities. Charcoal and firewood as a main source of energy is threatening our forest making questions for environmental sustainability and diminishing efforts to fight against poverty in the country. In many instances, the poor depend highly or wholly on natural resources such as soil, water and forests have resulted in soil erosion, deforestation and reduced water retention in the soils. Fortunately, there are now serious initiatives taking place, nationally and internationally to respond to environmental challenges and specifically climate change. Tanzania is a signatory to several conventions that promote environmental sustainability. The country has also been at the forefront in the implementation of various development activities which are in line with Tanzania Development Vision 2025 and Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development that foster to reduce carbons. In collaboration with stakeholders, KIWAMWAKU FOUNDATION is eager to achieve the objective number three through these strategies;

  • Promoting trees planting campaign to slow the connected crises of climate change and biodiversity loss through KIWAMWAKU FOUNDATION branches.
  • Emphasizing on use sustainable charcoal (alternative charcoal and improved stoves) and embanking on RE technologies.
  • Implementation of Fuel-efficient cook stoves campaign with the idea to reduce cutting down of trees charcoal or firewood and promote environmental conservation.
  • Making efforts to create climate  change awareness among community members and how human activities contribute to climate change and adopt socio-economic environment friendly practises (both mitigation and copying strategies)
  • Partnering up with stakeholders to promote the use of renewable sources of energy such as bio gas and solar.
  • KIWAMWAKU FOUNDATION intends to put effort on Lobbing with government to influence change in favour of environment conservation policies.

Activities to achieve objective 03

  3. Provision of knowledge to indigenous on adaptation and mitigation
  4. Promotion of climate change alternative seeds(hybrid)
  5. Establishment of climate change community radio
  6. Establishment of climate change resource centre

Government of United Republic of Tanzania has had different efforts to ensure health of Tanzanians is taken care of. Among these efforts there is Tanzania Development Vision 2025 which aims at ensuring beneficiaries and community health status is improved by December 2027. By 2025, Tanzania wants to achieve a high quality of livelihood for its citizens, peace, stability and unity, good governance, a well-educated society, and a competitive economy capable of producing sustainable growth and shared benefits by 2025. The development Vision 2025 identifies health as one of the priority sectors contributing to a higher-quality livelihood for all Tanzanians. This will be attained through strategies, which will ensure realisation of the following health service goals:

  • Access to quality primary health care for all;
  • Access to quality reproductive health services for all individuals of appropriate ages;
  • Reduction in infant and maternal mortality rates
  • Universal access to clean and safe water and sanitation;
  • Life expectancy comparable to the level attained by typical middle-income countries;
  • Food self-sufficiency and food security; and
  • Gender equality and empowerment of women

The second effort was The National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty, known in Kiswahili as the MKUKUTA expired one but still represents Tanzania’s commitment to the achievement of the 03 sustainable development goals. It was focused on growth, social well-being and governance, and is a framework for all government development efforts and for mobilising resources. The MKUKUTA aims to foster greater collaboration among all sectors and stakeholders. It has mainstreamed crosscutting issues (gender, environment, HIV/AIDS, human rights, disability, children, youth, elderly, employment and settlements) into all sector strategies. All sectors are involved in a collaborative effort rather than segmented into separate activities.

There has also been the Five Years’ Development Plan (FYDP I) 2011/12 – 2015/16 aimed to mobilise Tanzania’s resource potential in order to fast-track the provision of the basic conditions for broad-based and pro-poor growth. The Five Years’ Development Plan I goals for the health sector were to Increase accessibility to health services, based on equity and gender-balanced needs. To improve quality of health services, to strengthen management of the health system, to strengthen management of policies and regulations of health services, and to enhance human resource development for health and social welfare

 Another effort is Big Results Now In 2014; the National Key Result Area (NKRA) in health care was introduced in the Big Results Now approach, to join other NKRAs that were adopted by the Government of Tanzania (GOT) in 2013, in order to enhance the implementation of the Five Years’ Development Plan 2011/12 – 2015/16 and the Vision 2025. The health care NKRA is the eighth NKRA under the Big Results Now programme. Suddenly all these efforts were challenged by limited fund and increased population.

To assist the government reach its goals and sustainable development goal, KIWAMWAKU FOUNDATION is keen to collaborate with other stakeholders in attainment of this specific objective through the following strategies:
